1. Cabinet construction, not cabinet door style
Shaker versus slab is a finish decision. Plywood box versus particleboard, full-extension soft-close hardware, and a frameless European build versus a face-frame box — those are the lines that separate a 10-year kitchen from a 30-year kitchen.
2. The counter is a structural choice
Quartz is forgiving. Natural stone is beautiful and demands a sealed, supported substrate. Butcher block is warm and needs oil. Pick the material, then pick the colour — not the other way around.
3. The appliance package sets the cabinet plan
A 36" induction range, a counter-depth fridge, and a panel-ready dishwasher need to be specified before the cabinet shop draws a single line. Changing appliances mid-build is the single most common source of overruns we see.
4. Are you moving the sink?
Moving plumbing, gas, or load-bearing walls turns a remodel into a renovation. Sometimes it's worth it — a peninsula that becomes an island opens up the whole main floor. Sometimes it's not. We model both options before the contract.
